Review & Giveaway: Deceptively Delicious

This giveaway is now closed. Thank you for your participation.

Congratulations!

If you haven't already heard about this book, you've probably been out of the country or experiencing power blackout because Deceptively Delicious is the talk of the town.

Not only is it written by Jessica Seinfield (wife of Jerry) but it's already received many celebrity endorsements, include the Big O herself. When Jessica appeared on the Oprah show, she impressed the talk show host enough to receive her highly coveted approval.

The whole premise of this book is to get kids to eat healthily, by “hiding” pureed vegetables and fruits in everyday foods that your kids eat. When you think about it, the concept is quite simple. I just wonder why I never thought about it. She even puts spinach and carrots in her brownies! Now that's just darn right sneaky!

What I really liked about this book is all the colorful photos of the finished products. For me, I need to have a visual when deciding what to make. I don't know why, I just feel more motivated if I know what it looks like. There are also many helpful parenting tips printed throughout this book. Those alone would make this a great buy!

The downside is that I tend to make things on the spur of the moment. By looking at some of these recipes, I think I would have to plan in advance to make sure I had all the tools and ingredients in my kitchen.

All in all, I think this book lives up to it's hype. It's organized and well written. And let's face it, anything that gets my kids to eat more vegetables is well worth it's weight in gold.

This book is everywhere in the blogosphere. Count me in!

Do let me know if I am qualified though (non-US resident).

Nice idea, but its never worked for me. My anti-fruit-and-veg daughter just sniffs homemade cakes and brownies now and asks 'what's in this one then?'

She'll only eat them if I promise there's no hidden vegetables or fruit.

I want this book! My kids hate many veggies. I sub. to your rss feed also.

Oh my, this is my kind of book. My youngest (2) doesn't eat ANY veggies. I have done everything wrong, I think. Or she has inherited my husband's genes (he is JUST as bad!). I can't pick the "worst" one for those two, so I will pick the worst one for my oldest, who WILL actually eat a veggie or two - BROCCOLI!!!

Karen MEG said...

Okay, I NEED this book (pretty please?) My youngest doesn't eat ANY FRUIT OR VEGGIES!!!! My oldest will at least try, but he won't go anywhere near brussel sprouts

My kids can't stand spinach. Snuck in lasagna, that's fine, but on it's own. No way.

Romie said...

You know, my little one is really into fruits and veges, but I can't get her to touch cucumbers. Would love this book because I want to make sure and keep our eating habits healthy but not boring.

Jill said...

I don't have kids yet, but my husband hates veggies. I attribute this to the fact that his mother doesn't eat veggies and NEVER served them. He hates all of them, with sweet potatoes as the only exception (and I kind of classify those as a starch). I think asparagus is his most despised of all!

Bebemiqui said...

My kidlets hate celery...they say it tastes like soap. I have to agree with them. Blech!

Anonymous said...

My son actually hates peas. It's weird. If they're mixed with other food, he'll eat around them and spit them out.

Teresa said...

My 4 year old won't eat broccoli and my 1 year old hates peas. :) I would love to check out this book and get some good tips!

Melissa Markham said...

My kids hate 'mushy fruit' like bruised bananas or apples. They don't know if they hate veggies because they are too chicken to try them! But they do like carrots, green peppers, black olives and onions (the last three on pizza). My oldest used to love to eat frozen broccoli.

My children aren't very picky when it comes to fruit. They love it! Veggies are the same way with them. However, I do have two children that hate asparagus.

I blogged the giveaway in my Monday Edition of Contests Galore

Geez, I could use that book myself! Lol. I still don't eat any veggies or fruits, except bananas and apples. Bad bad but I've tried so hard to eat them but I have never succeeded!

My toddler hates carrots and lettuce. Apart from that, he´s game for just about anything, like tomatoes, spinach, avocado, etc. It helps that he has eaten mostly fresh veggies since he started on solids!

I love veggies and my family likes most of them but they aren't big fans of beans. The one veggie that is forbidden in my house is Okra. Perhaps this book can change that!

you are on my blog under my giveaways page! thanks for such a great bunch of contests.

Oh I need this book. My four year old will eat carrots and apples and an occasional banana, and NO OTHER FRUITS OR VEGGIES!!

I wouldn't know what he despises because he won't try anything.

*Tanyetta* said...

Carrots. He runs from them. *sigh*

ZAM said...

Cabbage. It's not that he doesn't like it but he rarely goes for it (compared with other veggies), maybe b/c it takes some time to chew it. But then b/c it has gas forming components, I rarely give cabbage to him.

Actually, my son is very much of a veg eater but I'm looking for ideas to "spice up" his food.

the Here's for the extra points.

I've lucked out in terms of my kids eating veggies, but I gotta say, I don't think they eat enough of them. I'd probably say the one that they like the least would be spinach.

Count me in. I'd LOVE to win this book! Thanks!

Oh, I would be 'blessed' and impressed if you picked me.I have 1 yr old twin boys, one eats a few vegies but the other eats nothing barely even eats puree fruit.
He still lives on Breastmilk, plain yoghurt, custard & little rice and even littler pasta. He has never eaten pureed vegies or even rice cereal I could so use use this book.If it weren't for the vitamins and breast milk. His borther was 800gm(1.5 lbs) smaller at birth and is now 2 lbs heavier.
Does the book say how to hide vegies in custard ?
I can't be doing it wrong and it isn't my cookin' since I feed both twins the same thing.
Even chocolate isn't a favourite of his -HELP !

I bought The Sneaky Chef (a similar recipe book), but hadn't heard about this one. It sounds great!

I'm always looking for sneaky recipes since my son is soooo picky. The only problem I have is trying to sneak things into foods that kids normally like, because he doesn't like those either - spaghetti, mac n cheese, hamburgers, etc.

I'd love to try Deceptively Delicious and talk about it on my site, and link back to you!

My son is pretty adventurous - we do "magic vegetable of the week" that he gets to select on his own. But, he does have one vegetable that I cannot get him to even put in his mouth: Kale! He refuses to eat it because it looks like a decoration. I guess he's right in a way!

Anonymous said...

ahhhh I so need to try this! For whatever reason both of my kids will NOT eat tomatoes, my 3 yr old can find the smallest little pice and then refuse to eat...she won't even touch it. I have considered putting blind folds on them~ then they could see all the 'strange things lurking in their food' but I am not sure it would be worth the mess! Thanks for the opportunity to win one! So, here it goes - I hope you are all sitting down for this one!! My 7-year old stepson would rather eat fruits and veggies than anything else (including candy). I know - strange!! (But nothing to complain about!) At Holiday gatherings and parties, you'll find him with a plant of veggies and dip and fruit and not junk!! I can only hope my daughter (now 7 months) will be the same - she'll probably be the junk food junkie like mommy!! The book would be an awesome addition to my very limited recipe collection. I love to cook and am always looking for ideas.
